Ferrari has said that its first fully electric vehicle, the Luce, is already receiving a significant number of orders, despite facing strong criticism over its design and its high price of around US$640,000.

The information was confirmed by the company’s CEO, Benedetto Vigna, who highlighted interest from both long-time customers and new buyers. Vigna also used the opportunity to dismiss comparisons with vehicles from other brands, including the Nissan Leaf.

“The Ferrari Luce has nothing to do with electric cars you have seen from other players. You have to see it and drive it to understand that it was not copied — not the interior, not the exterior, not the performance,” he said last Thursday (28) at an event in Modena, Italy.

The Luce, developed in partnership with the design studio LoveFrom, founded by former Apple design chief Jony Ive, embraces a more minimalist and aerodynamic concept, which ultimately fueled comparisons with other electric vehicles on the market and criticism over its break from the brand’s traditional style.

The model was recently presented in Rome, marking a historic turning point for the Italian brand, traditionally associated with high-performance combustion engines. Even so, Vigna emphasized that Ferrari will continue producing cars with its other powertrain options. “The final answer comes from customers,” he said.
